The Island City

Alameda occupies all of an island lying next to Oakland and part of a peninsula adjacent to Oakland International Airport. With a population of 77,000, it retains a small town flavor. More of an outdoors town than Oakland, it is still close to the theaters and nightlife of the bigger city.

Things to do in Alameda:

  • The beach – Alameda has two beaches, the only beach property along the eastern shore of the Bay. Both Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach and Alameda Beach offer swimming, surfing, and water sports. There are a large variety of water birds and the views of San Francisco in the sunset changes every evening with incredible photo opportunities.
  • Other outdoor sports – The town has a highly rated golf course.
  • Other water sports – SCUBA diving, sailing, paddle boarding are all available for everyone from beginners to experts.
  • Tours – Every type of tour you can think of is offered in Alameda. You can tour San Francisco by foot, bike, bus, car, or by air. Tours of the many Victorian era houses in Alameda are available. And food tours will take you around Alameda or the whole Bay.
  • Museums – The U.S.S.Hornet Lies at anchor in the harbor, a great floating museum, fascinating for kids and adults alike.
  • And there are several distilleries and wineries on the island that welcome visitors.

Alameda is a wonderful environment to live. Surrounded by the beauty of the Bay, close to San Francisco, rich with history and attractions, this little city is a delight.
