Irvine

Irvine

Overview

With the Santa Ana Mountains to the east and the San Joaquin Hills to the west, Irvine is surrounded by parks and wilderness. The area was a Spanish land grant, sold to three Americans in 1864. James Irvine, bought out his partners a few years later. The land went from a sheep ranch to olive and citrus orchards in the early 1900s. In 1959 the University of California asked for 1000 acres to build an extension. At that point the Irvine family had an architect draw up a master-planned city, which was finished in 1970. The population now is approximately 280,000.

The City Between the Hills

Irvine is noted for the number of educational facilities in the town with ten colleges and universities. The emphasis on education has influenced the public schools. Irvine’s schools have routinely been listed among the nation’s top schools and the city has been named as being among the top ten best places to live five times in the past twelve years. It has also made it onto the happiest city list and has been listed as the safest city in the US.

Irvine is inland, but the beach is less than ten miles away. Restaurants and shopping centers, parks and walking/biking trails, both in the city and in the mountains, theaters, and a dozen water parks and lakes offer entertainment and activities. Irvine is big enough to keep you captivated but not so big as to lose its small town charm. Come live in Irvine, a city you’ll love.
